Fire Safety Systems

Safety System

Home fires have become relatively rare thanks to implementation of fire protection systems in public and private buildings as well as fire safety educational campaigns which inform the public about the most common fire causes and strategies to reduce the risk of fire. Unfortunately, fire still posses a risk of property damage and a serious threat to human safety which is why installation of fire safety systems is a very good idea.

Smoke detectors are among the most popular fire safety systems and are found in both private and public buildings. They work by triggering an audio or visual alarm, or both when detecting smoke which may indicate fire. Sensitivity varies greatly from one smoke detector to another, while the most sensitive ones may react even to a smoke from a cigarette and cooking fumes. Smoke detectors are without a doubt a good investment but you are highly recommended to take yourself enough time to learn the differences between different types and brands of detectors in order to make the best choice. Also, keep in mind that they should be tested on a regular basis to make sure that they will really alarm you in case of a fire.

In addition to smoke detectors, many homeowners also decide to install fire sprinkles which discharge water when detecting fire, usually at a predetermined temperature. Unlike smoke detectors that merely alarm you on presence of fire, fire sprinklers actually help prevent the fire from causing damage to property and fire-related injuries by controlling the spread of fire. Just like smoke detectors, fire sprinklers require regular testing and inspection in order to make sure that they are in top shape. But even if you have installed fire sprinklers, you are highly recommended to have at least one fire extinguisher easily available. It makes no sense to wait for a fire sprinkler to activate in case you notice fire earlier. Be sure, however, to inspect it for weight, pressure and signs of damage at least once a year.

”Intelligent“ fire safety systems such as smoke detectors and fire sprinklers have become very affordable in the recent years, while their benefits by far outweigh the costs. However, you should never rely on your fire safety system alone because there is always a chance that it will fail. Just in case, invest in a quality fire extinguisher and have a manual fire alarm system too such as a hand bell or gong for instance to alarm your family members that fire has been detected. Just as important is to have a fire escape plan, especially if you have only smoke detectors because they do not stop the spread of fire. Make sure that your family members know how to react in case a fire surprises you in the middle of the night for instance. But the most important of all is to pay attention to all potential causes of fire and take care for all necessary fire prevention measures such as preventing your children an access to matches and lighters, never leave a candle burning unattended, etc.
